From 4 Years at Sea to Sydney Docks: Why We Founded MarineTasker

Here's the idea in one line: post your job once, and the quotes come to you. No ringing around, no waiting for callbacks, no mystery markups.
That simple shift is what MarineTasker is built on, and it exists because our founders, Martin and Sharon Sheridan, spent four years living aboard and cruising the Mediterranean and Ionian Seas. Four years of watching beautiful anchorages through one eye and a non-answering tradie through the other. They came home with a conviction: maintaining a boat shouldn't feel like a second job.
The broken marina noticeboard
Picture the old way. You're in a marina, something needs fixing, and your options are a physical pinboard, a Facebook or WhatsApp group, or a phone number someone scribbled on a receipt. If you're lucky, someone calls back. If you're very lucky, the quote that arrives makes sense.
Then comes the fun part: details scattered across text messages, a deposit paid to a stranger with zero protection, and the quiet dread of whether the person will actually show up. Boat owners overpay an arbitrary "marine premium" for simple jobs. Meanwhile, on the other side of the dock, brilliant independent tradies and family marine businesses burn their evenings quoting dead-end leads and spend Friday nights chasing unpaid invoices.
Both sides are decent people stuck in a broken system. That's the gap MarineTasker exists to close — not as another marine contractor, but as a two-sided platform where owners, verified commercial trades and capable local hands all get a fair go.

Four years, one lesson: trust is the product
Martin brings more than 30 years as a technology leader and solution architect. Sharon brings more than 25 years in customer service. Living aboard tied the two together: systems make work easier, but people make work happen — and both deserve protection.
The idea was stress-tested through the Sarina Russo business coaching program, and the prototype interfaces grew from there. What started as a frustration at anchor became a serious build: a marine services marketplace designed for real waterways, real berths and real budgets.
How the MarineTasker way works
The MarineTasker Standard replaces finding local providers, phone tag, mystery markups and payment worries with three simple steps:
| Stage | The old way: noticeboard, SMS and cash | The MarineTasker way |
|---|---|---|
| Finding help | Ask, does anyone know a marine X provider? Ring around, wait for callbacks, post in social media groups | Post once — add your vessel's location (berth, mooring or driveway) and let verified locals come to you and bid on your job |
| Agreeing the work | Quotes and changes scattered across messages | Compare real quotes side-by-side, with credentials and ratings upfront |
| Paying | Cash or deposit to a stranger, no protection | Upfront safe payments — funds secured before tools leave the truck |
| Verifying completion | Messages, memory, blurry photos | Verified before-and-after photos, then you inspect dockside and release payment with one tap |
| Keeping records | Soggy receipts in a glovebox | Every job auto-logs to your boat's digital vessel logbook, linked to its HIN |
That last column is the heart of it. Payment is only released when the work is inspected and signed off dockside — owners hold control until they're satisfied, and trades get paid automatically on sign-off instead of chasing invoices. Respect goes both ways, too: owners rate workmanship, and trades rate clear briefs, easy access and prompt payment. No fake reviews, no anonymous trolls — ratings can only come from real, completed, paid jobs.

Launching where it matters first
MarineTasker launches corridor by corridor, not everywhere at once. Greater Sydney and Broken Bay — Sydney Harbour, Pittwater, the Hawkesbury River and Port Hacking — go live first in January 2027, home to the densest cruiser and mooring population in the country. Lake Macquarie and Newcastle follow in April 2027, then Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia through 2027 and 2028.
Each corridor keeps it local: verified trades and skilled hands from your home waters, capped founding intakes per trade, and priority dispatch when your waterway goes live. It's a measured rollout designed so that on day one in your bay, the platform actually has people on it.
Claim your founding perks
At the time of writing this post, Open Beta is pre-launch, and early registration comes with perks: boat owners get a $25 credit toward their first task plus a free lifetime digital vessel logbook, while founding trades and skilled hands lock in a fixed 10% commission on their first 20 jobs or 6 months with $0 monthly subscription fees.
The marine industry runs on good people doing good work. Many hands make light work — and it's time the tools caught up!
