Unlocking Your Potential Earnings: How Contractors & Skilled Hands Maximise Income

Inconsistent work, time spent chasing dead leads and seasonal slowdowns can make marine income difficult to plan. MarineTasker’s Potential Earnings Calculator gives providers a way to model possible weekly, monthly and annual earnings before the platform’s planned launch.
It’s a planning tool, not a promise of work or take-home pay. MarineTasker is currently collecting sign-ups; it isn’t yet operating live jobs or payments. But running a few realistic scenarios can help providers think through the work they want, the hours they can offer and the value of a steadier pipeline.

How the earnings calculator works
The calculator takes providers through four choices:
- Choose a workforce tier. Commercial Pro / Marine Trade is for licensed professionals and specialists. Skilled / Capable Hands covers suitable tasks such as detailing, crewing and boat care.
- Select a task category. Each category has an indicative benchmark task value. For example, the calculator pre-fills marine mechanics and propulsion at $480 per task for Commercial Pros, and exterior hull wash and deck chamois at $150 per task for Skilled Hands.
- Set a weekly workload. The calculator groups activity as casual (1–2 tasks), steady (4–5) or full-time (8+).
- Review the projection. It displays weekly gross, estimated first-week commission and net payout, alongside projected monthly and annual figures.
The calculator gives typical task-value ranges of $150–$2,500 for Commercial Pros and $80–$800 for Skilled Hands. These are indicative ranges, not set rates or a guarantee that a task will be available at that value.
For example, four mechanic tasks at the $480 benchmark produce $1,920 gross for the week. At the calculator’s 10% founding commission, its indicative payout is $1,728. Four hull washes at $150 each produce $600 gross, or $540 after that commission. Both examples exclude GST and platform fees; they’re illustrations, not income promises.
The founding rate applies to a provider’s first 20 jobs or first six months, whichever comes first. After that, the standard commission is 15%+ (tiered), excluding GST and platform fees. The calculator’s projections use its stated assumptions, so providers should check the current calculator details when comparing scenarios.
Hourly rates: know what your task value needs to cover
The calculator is based on task values, not a prescribed hourly wage. A benchmark can help providers sanity-check a quote, but the right price depends on the job’s scope, location, access and the experience required.
Before quoting, consider the full job:
- Travel and access: A marina berth, slipway or swing mooring can involve very different travel and setup time. At Pittwater, for example, a tender run to a mooring may add time that a pontoon-side task doesn’t.
- Materials and equipment: Include consumables, tools and any agreed parts.
- Scope and conditions: A straightforward washdown isn’t the same as a heavily fouled hull or a job that requires extra preparation.
- Your time beyond the task: Account for enquiries, quoting, preparation, travel and job records, not only the hours spent working on the vessel.
- Your qualifications: Licensed and insured trades should be matched to work that requires their expertise. Suitable care and detailing tasks can be a better fit for capable skilled hands.
Clear scope and photos help both sides understand what’s being quoted. They can also reduce unnecessary site visits and make it easier to compare a quote with the task’s benchmark value.
Tradie tip: Run the calculator with your honest weekly numbers, not your best week. A steady four-task week you can repeat beats a 10-task fortnight you can’t.
Repeat maintenance: the compounding effect
One-off work can fill a gap, but repeat clients may reduce the time spent finding and quoting each next job. Regular washdowns, seasonal antifoul work, scheduled 100-hour services and safety-equipment checks can give both provider and owner a clearer maintenance rhythm.
Over time, a vessel’s digital logbook and job records are intended to help make recurring maintenance easier to track. Planned two-way ratings can also help build a record of reliable working relationships. For larger jobs completed in stages, MarineTasker plans to support milestone payments; payment features are planned and are not live during pre-launch.
| Consideration | One-off jobs | Repeat maintenance clients |
|---|---|---|
| Quoting effort | Starts again for each job | Can reduce once scope and expectations are established |
| Travel efficiency | May involve separate trips | Easier to group nearby work where schedules allow |
| Income predictability | Can fluctuate with lead flow | Recurring schedules may support steadier planning |
| Trust building | Starts with each new client | A consistent record can strengthen familiarity |
| Record keeping | Individual job details | Repeated work can make service history more useful |
Recurring work still needs clear pricing, agreed scope and sensible scheduling. The aim isn’t to promise fixed income; it’s to make good work easier to repeat.

Off-season income streams
A quieter season doesn’t mean every job stops. In Greater Sydney and Broken Bay, providers can look at work that suits the weather, vessel access and owner schedules.
Potential tasks include:
- Antifoul preparation and haul-out work when vessels are ashore.
- Electrical checks or other specialist inspections by appropriately qualified trades.
- Detailing, washdowns and boat-care jobs.
- Trailer-boat servicing near Botany Bay ramps or at owners’ homes.
- Tender runs and suitable care tasks for vessels on swing moorings in Broken Bay.
- Safety-equipment checks ahead of spring commissioning.
Commercial Pros can focus on work that requires trade qualifications, while Skilled Hands may be suited to detailing, crewing and appropriate boat-care tasks. Providers should only accept jobs within their capability, qualifications and insurance. The calculator’s casual setting of one or two tasks a week can help model supplementary work without assuming a full-time schedule.
Comparing ways to find work
MarineTasker’s calculator compares its planned marketplace model with common ways providers find customers. The figures below are indicative, and other channels’ prices and terms vary.
| Feature | MarineTasker (planned launch model) | Pay-per-lead directories | DIY digital ads | Word of mouth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost to quote | $0 to quote | Indicatively $30–$80+ per lead | Indicatively $15–$50+ per click | Usually free, but seasonal |
| Payment model | Commission on completed work under stated terms | Pay for leads, whether won or not | Pay for clicks | May involve referral or broker arrangements |
| Marine focus | Dedicated marine marketplace | Varies by directory | Depends on targeting | Often local and relationship-based |
| Payment protection | Planned secure milestone holds; not live during pre-launch | Provider manages payment follow-up | Provider manages payment follow-up | Provider manages payment follow-up |
| Scope and photos upfront | Designed for jobs to be pre-scoped with photos | Varies | Not assured | Often needs extra calls or visits |
MarineTasker is a two-sided technology platform and workflow facilitator, not a marine contractor. Its planned January 2027 launch is for Greater Sydney & Broken Bay, with corridor rollouts to follow. Secure upfront payments and milestone payments are planned features, not currently available for live jobs.
